PROMOTION OF DIALOGUES IN UPGRADED LEVELS OF GOVERNMENTAL AND PRIVATE SECTORS

We reached agreement to further promote consultation and dialogue between Korea and Japan to expand a scope of current relations at the various levels ranging from governments to private sectors.

Taking the governmental exchanges to a higher stage, we decided to maintain and strengthen the mutual consultation through the ministerial-level meetings. We also decided to promote the exchange of visits between the members of both parliaments that would contribute to improving diplomatic ties. Relating to this, we noted the significance in the personnel exchange of younger legislators in particular considering their responsibility in the 21st century. More importantly, Korea also conveyed its historic message to gradually lift its ban on Japanese culture.

At the level of private sectors, we mainly consented to support the successful organization of the 2002 World Cup and the related events in culture and sports. We recognized the leading role of the Korea-Japan Forum and the Joint Committee on the Promotion of Joint Historical Research to stimulate the intellectual exchanges and decided to further the extensive exchanges of various people such as academics, journalists and NGO leaders. In addition, we also agreed to keep promoting the status of Korean residents in Japan through continued bilateral consultations.
